Waterview House is a flagship project for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It was built by Jerram Falkus around 35 years ago along with three sister blocks. Recently Jerram Falkus carried out major refurbishment works involving replacement windows, new kitchens and refurbishment of common areas.

Maybrick was employed to replace the old individual Economy 7 heating systems with a new communal heating system - the first UK district heating scheme to use a micro-turbine Combined Heat and Power system providing heating to 66 flats.

CHP is not a new idea but has recently become recognised as an economic and environmentally friendly option. A CHP system is based on compact gas turbines and high-speed generators. It efficiently and cost-effectively produces electrical power and useful heating and cooling to be used on site.

The gas to the CHP unit is compressed to high pressure. The high-pressure gas feeds a gas turbine in the CHP which generates electricity. This electricity can be used to power local facilities, or sold to the national grid. The unit used at Waterview House - the Bowman Turbogen T45 - will generate 45kw of electricity.

The second product of the gas turbine is heat. The T45 will generate between 80 and 225kw of thermal capacity. This is passed through the return of 4 boilers which operate only if the water passing through requires extra heat.

A full case study of the Waterview House project and a CD presentation is available from our head office to interested parties. Additional information about CHP:
